Massacres in schools, homes and churches
will not change America’s deadly gun culture

July 2022: Deadly shootings in schools, homes, churches or shopping malls do not deter Americans from buying and owning guns. American gun owners possess some 400 million weapons, accounting for nearly half the privately owned guns in the entire world. according to a 2018 report by the Small Arms Survey, a Geneva-based organisation. The US ratio of 120.5 firearms per 100 residents, up from 88 per 100 in 2011, is higher than in any other country in the world. Indeed, since the mass shootings in Buffalo (New York) and Uvalde (Texas) in May 2022 sales of semi-automatic AR-15 guns have surged.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that a total of 45,222 people died from gun-related injuries during 2020. The BBC in London published comparative research in May 2022 which showed that in the US 79 per cent of all homicides were gun-related, while in Canada only 37 per cent of homicides are committed with guns. The respective figures for Australia and the UK are 13 and four per cent.

America’s gun culture will not change. Since America did nothing after 20 primary school children and six adults were massacred at Sandy Hook (Connecticut) in December 2012, there is little hope that this year’s mass killings will change the country’s fascination with guns or its quasi-religious belief in the US Constitution’s Second Amendment.

On 14 February 2018, 17 students were shot dead at a high school in Parkland, Florida by a 19-year-old teenager, using the same type of gun that was used at Sandy Hook, while on 18 May 2018, a 17-year-old student shot dead 10 people and wounded 13 others at Santa Fe High School (Houston) Texas. In October 2018, 11 synagogue goers were shot dead in Pittsburgh, PA. On 3 August 2019, a far-right gunman killed 23 people and injured 23 others at a Walmart store in El Paso (Texas). And in May 2022, an 18-year-old man, motivated by hate against Black people, shot and killed ten people in Buffalo (New York). In the same month, another 18-year-old shot and killed 19 school kids and two teachers at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde (Texas) after having shot his grandmother in her home. One month later (4 July 2022), during a Fourth of July parade in a Chicago suburb, a 22-year old gunman perched on a rooftop opened fire on families waving flags and children riding bikes, killing six and wounding more than 36.

Mass shootings in 2022
Between January and June 2022, gun violence in the US caused the death of more than 19,000 people, including 8,500 murders and 10,500 suicides. Some 700 children and teenagers were killed and 1,800 injured. While America’s gun lobby, led by the National Rifle Association (NRA) claims that people buy and own guns to protect their families and homes, there have been less than 500 cases where guns were used in self-defence.

Following the Buffalo and Uvalde mass shootings, US President Joe Biden said that over the last two decades, more school-aged children have died from guns than on-duty police officers and active-duty military combined. Guns are the number one killer of children in the US. The number one killer. More than car accidents. More than cancer.”

American culture accepts violence and the ready availability of guns make it deadly. Joseph Pierre, a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, wrote in a paper that gun culture was American culture. “We’re a country born out of violent revolt against an oppressor. In more recent generations, the idea of ‘good guys with guns’ - played out in childhood games ... has remained part of the archetypal American hero. It’s something that’s routinely reinforced in Hollywood cinema that glorifies gun violence when it’s used to fight bad guys.”

Mass school shootings
In the two decades following the Columbine mass shooting in 1999, the US has experienced at least 12 mass school shootings and hundreds of smaller-scale attacks that have touched every state in the union, with more than 278,000 students experiencing some form of gun violence. John Cohen, a former Department of Homeland Security official, stated that Columbine “absolutely” influenced subsequent shootings. Mass shootings since Columbine include:
• Robb Elementary School, Uvalde, Texas. In May 2022, a shooter killed 19 fourth-grade students and two teachers and was in turn killed by law enforcement officials.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Parkland, Florida. In 2018, a shooter killed 17 students and wounded 17 more.
• Santa Fe High School, Houston, Texas: In May 2018 a 17-year-old shot dead 10 people and wounded 13 others.
Sandy Hook Elementary School, Newtown, Connecticut. In 2012, a shooter killed 20 first-grade students, six adults, and finally himself.
• Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia. In 2007, a shooter killed 27 students and five faculty members, as well as himself. As of 2021, the Virginia Tech attack is the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.

Domestic gun violence
The presence of a gun allows an ordinary argument to turn deadly, a scenario that is increasingly played out in peoples’ homes.

Analysis by City Mayors Research shows that almost one third of shootings happens in domestic settings. The research examined 161 mass shootings, defined as incidents where three and more people were killed by guns, and found that in 53 cases (32.9%) family members, children or relationship partners were involved. The most horrific incidents include a father who killed his two children and their mother, a 20-year-old man who fatally shot his father, mother and sister and a mother who killed her husband and two daughters. There are numerous cases where victims include children as young as five, six or seven. (Please note, while we have included the mass killing in Chicago on 4 July 2022 in our below table, the shooting during a Fourth of July Parade was not part of City Mayors’ original research.)

Domestic violence in America does not seem to be regarded as a major social problem. It barely features in political discussions and local media pay domestic shootings with deadly outcomes hardly more attention than road traffic accidents.

Worst recent incidents of domestic
violence with fatal consequences.
(Please note: City Mayors Research examined 53 cases of domestic mass shootings in the largest US cities. The sample is by no means exhaustive as it does not include instances where fewer than three people were killed or shootings in smaller communities.)

The Second Amendment
Despite all the carnage caused by guns on America’s streets, in homes and schools, the country’s gun culture will not change. Since America did nothing after 20 primary school children and six adults were massacred at Sandy Hook (Connecticut) in December 2012, there is little hope that this year’s mass killings in Buffalo and Uvalde will change Americans’ fascination with guns or their quasi-religious belief in the US Constitution’s Second Amendment.

There have been very few suggestions to re-write the Second Amendment, which supposedly guarantees every American citizen the right to keep and bear arms: “A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” While in most cases before it, the US Supreme Court has sided with the gun lobby’s interpretation of the Second Amendment, some scholars argue that its authors meant to say that citizens had the right to form and join armed militias to defend themselves against enemies.

*Methodology
The analysis was carried out in May and June 2022 following the mass shootings in Buffalo (New York) and Uvalde (Texas). The research considered mass shootings, defined as incidents where three or more people were killed, in the largest US cities. The victims may include the gunman. In each case, the research made use of local media reports. Raw data was provided by Gun Violence Archive (GVA), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Small Arms Survey and the BBC. (Please note, while we have included the mass killing in Chicago on 4 July 2022 in our above table, the shooting during a Fourth of July Parade was not part of City Mayors’ original research.)
